A REGIONAL FORUM OF CONVERGENCE FOR NATIONAL & INTERNATIONAL DEFENCE EXHIBITORS
The Defence Export Promotion Organization (DEPO) of Pakistan since its inception in year 2000 is biennially organizing International Defence Exhibitions and Seminar (lDEAS) to display a variety of defence products of both public and private sectors of Pakistan. Historically, the concept of organizing IDEAS dates back to 1999 when the first International Pakistan Navy Defence show was successfully held at Karachi. Today, DEPO under Ministry of Defence Production (MoDP) is the core organization spearheading IDEAS and instrumental in addressing customers’ quest for export of defence products and services of defence industry through promotion, facilitation and coordination. IDEAS is now ranked as one of the major international events in the region with regard to participation of national and foreign defence industry, delegations including representatives from ministries and armed forces. During the last decade, Pakistan has exponentially diversified its traditional and non-traditional exportable products and is exploring new avenues to expand its customer base. Pakistan’s defence industry continues to update its defence production capabilities through innovative and cost effective technologies to meet the changing requirements of its valued customers. Pakistan’s defence manufacturing sector is now fully capable of meeting the requirements in areas of medium, as well as, selected areas of high technology. Pakistan has the capability to offer high grade weapon systems like MBTs, basic & advance trainers aircraft, anti tank missile systems, maritime offshore patrol vessels / naval craft, air delivered munitions, state of the art secure communication systems, small arms and a wide range of ammunition and explosives. All these products are ISO certified, aerospace standards of latest version and R&D organizations, guaranteeing customer satisfaction.
IDEAS – 2016, being 9th in the series was successfully held at Expo Center, Karachi, Pakistan from 22 – 25 November 2016. The event received an overwhelming response from across the globe. The event included a host of activities comprising display of different defence products / equipment, an impressive inauguration ceremony, seminars, sideline conferences and networking of high level delegates with exhibitors and OEMs. The inauguration ceremony was held on 22 November 2016 wherein Mr Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, the Prime Minister of Pakistan graced the occasion as chief guest. The ceremony was largely attended by high profile foreign delegates and officials including federal and provincial ministers, services chiefs, senior government officials, local and foreign diplomats and a large number of trade visitors / exhibitors. In addition, 14 MoUs were signed between various defence industry of Pakistan and nine countries including Azerbaijan, Belgium, Czech Republic, Italy, Niger, Poland, Republic of Uganda and UAE. Beside its global significance, the event also led to tremendous economic activities like:
• Served as a major regional market place for not only promoting defence products but also developing strategic partnership.
• Extended job opportunities to more than 5000 people who were directly/ indirectly involved in various activities of IDEAS 2016.
• Local and foreign exhibitors hired more than 11,000 Sq M area of Karachi Expo Centre. Resultantly, afforded great business opportunity to a large number of vendors, contractors and services providers.
• Provided great economic dividends to local hotels, car rental and aviation industry.
More than 90 delegations representing 43 countries attended IDEAS – 2016 including 24 high level delegations headed by defence ministers, secretaries and services chiefs of respective countries. A total of 427 firms (258 foreign and 169 local) exhibited their products. Amongst the international exhibitors, China, Russia and Turkey established exclusive country pavilions. Defence products and equipment from companies representing North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Far East were also impressively displayed. During sideline conferences, eminent national and international defence analysts candidly shared their views about “Stability and the Economics of Regional Peace in South Asia”. International and local media extensively covered the event and published special supplements, reports and interviews of the participating delegates and exhibitors.
